2. Bread St – Formerly the site of the bread market in medieval London, the Mermaid Tavern (c1411–1666), and Saddler’s Hall (c1454–1641). John Milton was born in Bread St at the Sign of the Spreadeagle in 1608. The street was burnt in the Great Fire of London in 1666. The Bank of England’s administrative offices are situated at number four.
3. Milk St – Once the site of London’s medieval milk market, St Mary Magdalene’s Church was built here in the twelfth century and Sir Thomas More was born here in 1478. This street also suffered great damage in the Great Fire of 1666.
4. Molière’s M. Porceaugnac – Molière (1622–1673) wrote this play, one of his best, in 1669, for Louis XIV at Chambord. Louis XIV gave his patronage and protection to certain writers, notably Molière and Racine, so long as they praised him in their works.
5. Judge Bradshaw – Judge Bradshaw (1602–1659) presided over the court that condemned Charles I to death in January 1649.
6. Freischuts – or The Freeshooter, an opera by German composer Von Weber (1786–1826), based on the German folktale of a legendary marksman who is given seven bullets by the Devil. Six of them will hit targets chosen by the marksman but the seventh is reserved for a target of the Devil’s choice.
7. ‘Abon Hassan’ – A musical drama or one act opera, also by Von Weber, about a young merchant of Baghdad, taken from a story called ‘The Sleeper Awakened’ in the Arabian Nights.
8. Von Weber – (1786–1826). Carl Maria Friedrich Ernst, Baron. German composer and opera director. His work was important during the transition from Classical to Romantic music in that it furthered the ideals of Romanticism, which place the heart’s impulses above the head’s rationalism.
9. Parish church – The Church of St John the Baptist, Church St, Halifax, which dates from the early twelfth century. Possibly there was also an earlier Saxon church on the same site. The greater part of the existing church was built c1274–1314, when Halifax gained its first vicar, a man called Ingelard Tubard.
10. Fulling mills – The process of fulling (also called milling) was that of cleansing and thickening cloth by beating and washing with soap or fuller’s earth.
11. Daniel Defoe – (1660–1731) English journalist and novelist, author of Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders. For his excellent description of Halifax and the industriousness of its population in the early eighteenth century, see pp 598–610 of his book A Tour Thro’ the Whole Island of Great Britain vol II, first published in 1725.
12. Piece Hall – Built on a site known as Talbot Close, the Piece Hall was opened on 1st January 1779. It is a unique cloth hall, built specifically for the buying and selling of cloth pieces which were manufactured by the small industries in and around Halifax. The design of the Piece Hall is taken from Roman Classical architecture, adapted by a Liverpool architect of the day, John Hope.
